(56) Microphages

Intense inflammatory responses start with a rapid and fairly transient influx of polymorphonuclear phagocytes. Unlike macrophages (big eaters – eaters of large stuff), polymorphs are microphages (eaters of small stuff); and, of course, bacteria are characteristically in the "small stuff" category. This sequence may be a "designed" effort to clear out the small – bacterial – invaders before the more important clearance of damaged self cells begins. This perspective may be worth exploring.
